If you are interested in becoming a teacher there are several licensure levels available for undergraduates at the University of Northern Colorado. For example, you can choose to become an elementary or secondary school teacher. In addition, UNC now offers a Special Education major that carries with it a K-12 (kindergarten through 12th grade) licensure. Other K-12 licensures are offered in music, physical education and art.

Because the state of Colorado does not allow students to major in education, (except for special education as mentioned above) those seeking to be teachers must choose from numerous eligible liberal-arts majors, complete an emphasis area within the major as well as teacher licensure courses. You must make sure the desired level of licensure can be attached to a chosen major and emphasis. For example, if you wish to become an elementary education teacher you must major in Interdisciplinary Studies, complete an emphasis in liberal arts and complete one of 18 concentration areas.

If you are preparing to be early childhood (birth - age 8) teachers, you will participate in a joint program with Aims Community College. You will major in Interdisciplinary Studies with an Early Childhood Education emphasis and take classes at both institutions.

Feel free to scroll the list of majors above noting the teacher licensure keys (E, S, SP and K-12) signifying which types of licensure can be attached to which majors. Also, you can contact the UNC College of Education for more details at (970) 351-2430 or the School of Teacher Education.
