The Aloha Program

The Aloha-UNC Program has been helping Hawaii’s students and their families learn about and prepare for life at the University of Northern Colorado for over 20 years. The program is a joint effort between the UNC Admissions Office, UNC Alumni Relations, and local liaison, Mr. Lloyd Yonemura, a 1972 alumnus of UNC.

The program is officially recognized by the University and Lloyd received the prestigious President’s Award as the Alumni Volunteer of the Year in 1995. The entire program is staffed by volunteer alumni, students, and parents. It receives total support from the University although active recruiting is not a part of the program.

The Program falls into two phases. In the first phase, the program provides information about UNC and its programs. The program can also answer questions about the city of Greeley and the state of Colorado. Throughout this phase, the program functions primarily as a source of information.

All applicants who have been accepted to UNC will be contacted by letter. The letter will contain information on how to contact the program’s liaison. The letter is followed by a phone call. The introductory letter and phone call will be the only time an applicant is contacted by the program. Basically, the program wants to answer any questions that are posed and provide any information requested. If there are no questions or requests for information, the student and family are invited to contact the liaison if the need arises. All subsequent contact is initiated by the student or family.

Those students who decide to attend UNC as either first-time freshmen, transfers, or participants in the National Student Exchange program fall into the second phase of the Aloha-UNC Program. The program will host summer meetings, coordinate group arrangements for air and ground transportation, work with the University to coordinate check-in to the dorms, and orientation the following day. The program also works to coordinate summer registration for fall classes.

UNC is the only mainland university to come to Hawaii to provide so much help to Hawaii’s students and families.
